Steel Weight Calculator
Steel weight comes from density, cross-section area and length. Use 7.85 g/cm3 for common carbon and low-alloy steel estimates unless the mill certificate gives a better value.

Steel weight formula
For common carbon steel stock with density in g/cm3, area in mm2 and length in mm:
kg = 7.85 * area * length / 1,000,000
Useful steel shortcuts
- Round bar kg/m: 7.85 * pi * d^2 / 4000, with d in mm.
- Plate kg: 7.85 * width * thickness * length / 1,000,000.
- Round tube kg/m: 7.85 * pi * (OD^2 - ID^2) / 4000.
Worked example
A 25 mm steel round bar has area pi * 25^2 / 4 = 490.9 mm2. Its weight per metre is 7.85 * 490.9 / 1000 = 3.85 kg/m.
