Material weight formula
The general formula is weight equals density times volume. For stock sections, volume is cross-section area times length.
weight = density * area * length
What changes by shape
- Round bar: area = pi * d^2 / 4.
- Flat bar or plate: area = width * thickness.
- Round tube: area = pi * (OD^2 - ID^2) / 4.
Worked example
A material with density 7.85 g/cm3, area 490.9 mm2 and length 1000 mm weighs 7.85 * 490.9 * 1000 / 1,000,000 = 3.85 kg.
Frequently asked questions
Is material weight different from metal weight?
The formula is the same. The calculator handles different materials by changing density.
Which density should I use?
Use the material certificate for critical work. For estimates, choose the nearest material in the calculator or density chart.
