Stainless steel weight formula
For quick 304 or 316 estimates, use density = 8.00 g/cm3 unless a material certificate gives a better value.
kg = density * area * length / 1,000,000
Common grade notes
- 304, 316 and 303: often estimated near 8.00 g/cm3.
- 410 and 430: usually a little lighter than 300-series stainless.
- 17-4 PH: use the grade value or certificate when weight matters.
Worked example
A 250 mm by 10 mm by 1000 mm 304 stainless plate has volume 2,500,000 mm3. At 8.00 g/cm3 it weighs 20.0 kg.
