Miter cut angle
Split the total turn across the number of miter joints, then cut each matching pipe end at half the joint deflection.
cut_angle = (total_turn / (pieces - 1)) / 2
Long-to-short difference
The full high-to-low difference on the pipe OD comes from the cut angle and the outside diameter.
D_ls = OD * tan(cut_angle)
Template workflow
- Use actual OD, not nominal pipe size.
- Mark equal stations around the circumference.
- Transfer the calculated drops from high point to low point.
- Account for weld gap, bevel and shop allowance separately.
Frequently asked questions
Is pipe miter the same as pipe saddle?
No. A miter joins pipe pieces to make an elbow. A saddle or fishmouth cuts a branch to fit another pipe.
Does the calculator include fitting takeout?
No. It is layout geometry only; project specs, weld gap, bevel and fit-up allowances remain separate.
