Aluminum Weight Formula
Aluminum weight is density times volume. For general estimates, 6061 aluminum is about 2.70 g/cm3, so aluminum stock weighs roughly 34% as much as the same size steel stock.

The aluminum weight formula is the same as any other material:
W = rho * A * L
where rho is density, A is cross-section area and
L is length. With density in g/cm3, area in mm2 and length in mm:
weight (kg) = rho * A * L / 1,000,000.
Use 2.70 g/cm3 for 6061 aluminum when you need a quick estimate. Other common alloys are close but not identical: 5052 is about 2.68 g/cm3, 2024 is about 2.78 g/cm3 and 7075 is about 2.81 g/cm3.
Common aluminum stock shortcuts
- Plate or sheet:
kg = 2.70 * width * thickness * length / 1,000,000, with dimensions in mm. - Round bar:
kg/m = 2.70 * pi * d^2 / 4000, with d in mm. - Square bar:
kg/m = 2.70 * a^2 / 1000, with side a in mm.
Worked example
A 250 mm wide, 10 mm thick, 1 m long 6061 aluminum plate has volume
250 * 10 * 1000 = 2,500,000 mm3. Its weight is
2.70 * 2,500,000 / 1,000,000 = 6.75 kg. The same size mild-steel
plate is about 19.6 kg.
Why alloy matters
Aluminum is much lighter than steel, but alloy chemistry still moves the density by a few percent. For shipping weights, BOM totals or counterbalance calculations, pick the actual alloy in the calculator instead of using a single generic aluminum value.
