Standing Rigging Spec Calculator

Overall stay or shroud length between bearing pin centers at the chosen target condition.
ft
Loaded/tensioned measurements subtract elastic stretch from the wire cut length. Slack/shop measurements do not.
Distance consumed by fixed terminal hardware from pin center to the wire cut/end reference.
in
Safe closed turnbuckle length from lower pin center to the wire cut/end reference.
in
Maximum safe open turnbuckle length from lower pin center to the wire cut/end reference with required thread engagement.
in
Percent of safe turnbuckle travel used for the nominal build length.
% open
Linear take-up per threaded end per turn. A 20 TPI thread is 0.050 in per turn per end.
in
Most turnbuckles move two threaded ends when the body turns; some one-sided adjustments move one end.
Minimum breaking strength from the exact wire and terminal manufacturer.
lbf
Target tension used only to estimate elastic stretch allowance.
% MBS
Nominal standing rigging wire diameter.
in
Effective axial modulus for the wire construction. Stainless wire rope is commonly below solid-bar stiffness.
Mpsi
Approximate fraction of solid round area occupied by metal in the strand construction.

Method notes 4 notes
  • Turnbuckle setup length = closed length + safe travel * setup percent / 100.
  • Wire span at target = pin-to-pin length - fixed terminal allowance - turnbuckle setup length.
  • If the entered pin-to-pin length is loaded/tensioned, cut wire length subtracts the estimated elastic stretch. If it is a slack/shop length, no stretch is subtracted.
  • Standing rigging is safety-critical. Final replacement specs require exact fitting drawings or direct hardware measurements, terminal manufacturer allowances, thread engagement, toggles, chainplate condition, corrosion/fatigue inspection and qualified rigging review.
