Spring Pitch & Solid Height Calculator

Solve pitch from an existing free length, or solve free length from a desired body pitch.
Diameter of the spring wire.
mm
Coils that deflect. Half-coil values are acceptable for a layout estimate.
Unloaded spring length used to calculate body pitch and travel to solid.
mm
Compression at the checked operating point. Used only for clearance to solid.
mm
Sets the simplified inactive end-coil allowance used for solid height.

Body pitch(p)
4.75mm
Pass

Open body pitch leaves positive active-coil gap at free length.

p = d + (L0 - Ls) / Na.

Available compression before coil bind.

Active-coil gap(p - d)3.75mm

Open body pitch leaves positive active-coil gap at free length.

Working length(L0 - x)30mm

Working point remains clear of solid height.

Method notes 3 notes
  • Solid height uses a simplified end-type stack: closed-ground Ls = d*(Na + 2), closed/squared Ls = d*(Na + 3), open/plain Ls = d*(Na + 1).
  • Body pitch is a first-pass active-coil pitch estimate. End transitions, grinding allowance, preset, tolerances and supplier drawing details can change production geometry.
  • This page does not calculate spring rate, Wahl stress, fatigue, buckling or permanent set. Use the compression spring calculator for load and stress checks.
