Pipe Miter Cut Calculator

Actual pipe outside diameter used for the miter template.
in
Total direction change of the finished mitered pipe assembly.
°
Number of pipe pieces in the mitered elbow. Two pieces create one joint; three pieces create two equal joints.

Caution

Cut angle from square = deflection per joint / 2.

Also computed

Long-to-short difference(D_ls)Caution4.5in

Long-to-short difference = OD x tan(cut angle).

Deflection per joint(alpha)Caution90°

Deflection per joint = total turn angle / number of miter joints.

Pipe circumference(C)14.137in

C = pi x OD.

8-mark spacing(C/8)1.7671in

Divide circumference into eight equal wrap-around marks.

Drop at 1/8 mark0.65901in

Drop from high point at 45 degrees around the pipe.

Method notes 3 notes
  • For equal-piece miters, joints = pieces - 1, joint deflection = total turn / joints, and each matching pipe end is cut at half that joint deflection.
  • The unwrapped cut curve uses drop = (D_ls / 2) x (1 - cos(theta around pipe)). The 1/8, 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 marks mirror around the pipe.
  • This is layout geometry only. It does not include weld gap, bevel, backing, branch saddles, flow loss, spool tolerance, code rules, inspection or shop fabrication allowances.
