Peck Drilling Calculator

Cutting diameter used for drill point allowance.
in
Required depth at full diameter before adding the drill point allowance.
in
Included point angle. Common twist drills are 118 or 135 degrees.
°
Drill rotational speed.
rpm
Axial feed for each spindle revolution.
in
Maximum programmed feed increment before retracting or chip-breaking.
in
Effective rapid/feedrate used for retract and return path timing. Use a conservative value if acceleration dominates.
in/min
Distance above the hole surface used for full retract and final retract.
in
For full-retract cycles, rapid return stops this distance above the previous peck bottom before feed resumes.
in
Short up/down distance between pecks for chip-break cycle timing.
in
Optional dwell or chip-clear pause added once per peck.
s
Hole count for total cycle time.

Method notes 4 notes
  • Full-retract timing approximates a G83-style cycle: feed to each peck, retract to the clearance plane, rapid back near the prior peck bottom, then feed again.
  • Chip-break timing approximates a G73-style cycle: short chip-break retracts between pecks and one final retract to clearance.
  • Controller parameters, acceleration, coolant-through drills, dwell behavior, chip-load reduction, pilot holes, spot drilling and tool changes are not included.
  • Choose peck depth from toolmaker guidance for material, drill type, coolant, hole depth ratio and chip evacuation.
