Notched Joist Capacity Calculator

Common North American dressed lumber sizes. Use custom for actual measured width and depth.
Simple-span distance between supports.
ft
Uniform live plus dead line load on the member.
lb/ft
Distance from one support to the notch critical section. The symmetric nearest-support station is used internally.
ft
Depth removed from the member at the checked section.
in
Adjusted allowable bending design value for the selected species/grade/size and conditions. Default is an example only.
ksi
Adjusted allowable shear design value. Default is an example only.
ksi
Allowed notch depth divided by full member depth, entered as a percent for this screen.

Governing check: entered notch-depth ratio.

Maximum of net-section bending, net-section shear and entered notch-depth ratio checks.

Also computed

Net depth at notch(d_net)Pass8.25in

Uses 2x10 actual 1.5 x 9.25 in with notch depth subtracted from the full member depth.

Notch depth ratio(a/d)10.81%

Entered max notch depth(a_max)1.545in

From the entered max notch ratio. Verify the project code rule before using it.

Section modulus loss(Delta S)20.45%

Loss from replacing gross depth with net depth at the notch.

Bending utilization(U_b)0.2586

Shear utilization(U_v)0.2993

Method notes 5 notes
  • Uses 2x10 actual 1.5 x 9.25 in; net depth is full depth minus the entered notch depth.
  • Simple-span uniform-load screen only: R = w*L/2, Mx = R*x - w*x^2/2, Vx = |R - w*x|.
  • Rectangular net-section properties use S_net = b*d_net^2/6 and I_net = b*d_net^3/12.
  • Enter adjusted Fb/Fv values and the notch-depth ratio from the same adopted design basis. Defaults are examples, not code approval.
  • Does not check end-notch location rules, tension-side notch prohibitions, holes, splits, bearing, lateral restraint, repetitive-member factors, connections, reinforcement, sistering, repair details or permit acceptance.
